Lola ya Bonobo sanctuary is a sprawling forest just outside Kinshasa, the capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo. It is the world’s only bonobo sanctuary and is home to over 50 orphaned bonobos.
Bonobos are one of the most endangered primates. They live only in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Because of the 10 year civil war in Congo that killed over four million people, more than any war since World War II, bonobos are the most mysterious of all the great apes.
In the thick forests of the Congo Basin, poachers kill adult bonobos for meat and capture the infants to sell as pets. Under Congolese law, it is illegal to either kill or sell bonobos. Lola ya Bonobo works together with the Ministry for Environment and law enforcement to confiscate bonobos and bring them safely to the sanctuary.

Bonobo share 98.7% of our DNA, equal to our more famous cousins, chimpanzees. However, unlike chimpanzees, bonobos have not been known to kill one another. The hallmark of bonobo behaviour is their intense sexual activity, regardless of age or gender. Bonobos use sex to diffuse tension, conflict and aggression. Although bonobo society is fairly egalitarian, the females generally lead the multi-male, multi-female groups.

Hi! very amused by the website .
Nice site, I have bookmarked your site yet and I will come back again ! You have a gratest site!
howdy I quite enjoyed this website .
I am finally fed up with this “save the apes industry” that only seems to want money from us in the west somehow connecting us in the west to the hunting habits of the regions where these apes live. This propoganda you people push on us like; “they are just like us” ” They are our closest living relatives connected by 90% or so of dna”. I have gone through quite a few medical journals and I fail to see any similarities between human beings and apes. You see humans are the dominant species on earth by virtue of opposable thumbs, by virtue of the spark of a soul, which allows us to create things structures permanance in where we live the ability to communicate through writing ,music , arts etc. Now please tell me where these animals are similar to humans ,other than the dna link? You apehuggers are constantly bleating about the plight of the apes that are being hunted by people that have africa borneo etc as thier ancestral homes but you fanatics have come to those continents to tell these people that they are wrong and that they are killing their own relatives! How dare you! You are the corrupters of nature yourselves! You claim to “save ” these animals, but all you do is turn them into nothing more than pets, justlike we do in the west with dogs cats ferrets etc. You people name them then you pour incredibly rare resources like antibiotics, infant formula, even diapers, and oxygen into these animals to save them. Save them from what exactly? A life of what being fed? a life in some comfort? a lifetime of affection? You people and people like jane goodasll karl amman both incredible propogandists in their own right! If these baby apes came to me it would be right back into the jungle with them, I would drop the group of in a close proximity to a troop of bonobos and let nature take its course, return these animals to their own kind instead of corrupting the animals to the point where they are no longer true apes but just pets that are supported by the money you mooch from the west. Shame on you for propogating this filthy propoganda!
