Kata very sick

Category: kata | Date: Oct 10 2007 | By: admin

Kataco isn’t doing so well. She has amoebas. She doesn’t drink and she’s so dehydrated that her skin is hanging off her body.

It was so bad Crispin the vet had to give her an IV drip. The needle was gigantic. I nearly passed out just looking at it. It must have hurt so much but she barely whimpered.

Anne marie had to force feed her medicine for her amoebas.

I hope she doesn’t die. But she will if she doesn’t drink soon.

Claudine says Kataco is sad, very sad.

Sometimes, she says, bonobos die because they just don’t want to live any more. I cried in the toilet and spent an hour watching group one play in the fading sunlight

Oh Vanessa, this is just hearbreaking news. I know Lomela was in desprate shape for a while, maybe Kata will come out of it soon. Geez, I am just sitting here in tears…I wish she could feel all the virtual love coming her way and know that her life in Lola will be nothing but happiness despite her past. I am sending hugs to Kata and you today and praying that the tide will turn soon.

Oh no, oh no. I have a meeting in 20 minutes but tears are welling in my eyes. I know y’all are doing everything you can for her. I hope she finds the will to live. God, this is so very sad.

I am completely sad to hear this news. Poor little sweet baby. Please, please keep holding her and loving her and tell her we all love her and want her to live and be strong. She looks so, so sad in that last picture, like she’s trying to get rid of awful pictures in her mind and God only knows what her little eyes have seen. I will be thinking about her all day and sending her love. I hope she gets better. Lisa, California

I had to attend a farewell party for a colleague I like after reading this sad update. I didn’t feel much like being cheerful. Vanessa, I quite admire that you’re willing to feel emotionally attached to the bonobos you’re researching. So often it seems science is a cold, hard discipline but, IMO, it works best with an honest human touch. I will probably bawl my eyes out this evening once I’m home for little Kata and give my doggie, Mina, lots of hugs.

How cruel all of this seems. These two little girls have been my Congo ray of sunshine so this is absolutely heartbreaking. Like everyone else who has blogged, I can’t stop crying. If there is ANY treatment you can offer her that is outside of your budget, let us know. I would be happy to help. I doubt this is the case, but I don’t know what else to do. Please keep us posted and give them hugs and love from all of us.

You said this could happen because she would not drink milk and that she seemed to not know she was supposed to have milk– taken from her Mom so early and tragically I guess she didn’t know she was to drink milk–I pray she will drink - just drink Kata!! Please!!!!

(I posted in the wrong place.) I am far away in the Southwestern portion of the USA, but I am praying for Kata, Lomela and all the Bonobos. I explained to my daughter what a Bonobo was yesterday, and told her about Wildlife direct. My daugher is an American teenager - so she is online all the time. I asked her to spread the word.

Vanessa, how is poor little Kata doing? Any news? How is this affecting Lomela? I can’t stop thinking about these two dear babies.
A new baby bonobo was also born last month at the San Diego Zoo. There is video footage on the web as of today
of the new baby who—just adorable.

If you’d like to see Molly, the new baby bonobo at the SDZ, follow this link - http://www.sandiegozoo.org/videos/index.html - then choose “Click here for our video portal.” You’ll find Molly’s video at the top. Mostly I visit the SDZ site to watch Bai Yun’s new cub (giant panda) but I’ll be keeping an eye on Molly now, too. She is precious.
