On Monday the 12th of November, the day at Lola started like any other one. The sun rose to the high pitched screeches of awakening bonobos. But Claudine awoke to less pleasant news. She was notified that the Kinshasa zoo had just found a very your male bonobo in the city center. Apparently a Kinoise woman had bought him in Equateur and transported him to Kinshasa in the hopes of selling him. Unfortunately, not an uncommon occurrence. What was special in this case was that the lady had an official document from the provincial environmental authority, authorizing her to transport the bonobo for commercial use. This is of course highly illegal. Forgery or a mix-up in Equateur? Upon hearing the news, Claudine immediately mobilized her troops, sending Floran and Valerie to find the woman in question and invite her to Lola. When they returned they brought with them a very weak, sick, confused little bonobo, estimated at around three years old. The poor little animal was covered in sores around the torso, from his leash, his teeth had been pulled to be used in magic potions, he was suffering from a flue, and was exhausted to the edge of death. He had been through hell and back, and was not out of the woods yet. Before he was truly safe, the Lola staff had to convince his ‘owner’ to let him stay at Lola. It is illegal for anyone to buy a bonobo in the Congo, so the Lola staff could not agree to the woman’s demand that they paid her for giving over the little bonobo. All Claudine and her colleaues could do was appeal to her sense of civic duty and basic good sense. After a long while and a tour of the sanctuary, the Lola staff managed to convince the woman that bonobos are a priceless part of the Congolese heritage, and that if she kept the bonobo he would soon die. She would gain nothing, except a fine from the police or worse. She saw the reason in the arguments of the Lola staff and made the right choice. Now, Lola ya Bonobo is the new home of Eleke, who, though still weak, is adjusting fast to life in the sanctuary. He will remain under constant supervision and in quarantine for a few days, but soon he will join the other baby bonobos in the nursery, and be given a new chance at life.

It’s outrageous that the penalty for inhumane treatment of priceless animals like bonobo’s are so mild…. just a fine! Thank you for saving Eleke!
sheryl, washington dc on November 23rd, 2007 at 9:26 am
Really? the only penalty for capturing and torturing an endangered animal is a FINE? She should go to prison for a very long time! But, what about his teeth? How will he survive without teeth? Thank you for working so hard to save Eleke. He’s gorgeous. I’m looking forward to more pictures and updates on his progress, along with updates on Lo and Kata. s.

I know you cannot pay them for them because it would only make them capture more to sell but I just get heart and physically sick at what would have happened had she not given him up to you and it saddens me to no end how many don’t make it! They always seem to come to you in such horrible/horrific state and near death, just a total tragedy beyond words for me!

Poor little Eleke. Yes, I agree, this woman should go to jail. It’s a wonder she had a soft side considering she pulled his teeth out and kept him in conditions that would create such a sick and unhealthy little animal. I’m glad he was one of the lucky ones and made it to your loving sanctuary. Please let us know how he does and please give him, Lomela and Kata a big hug from me. Lisa

Good find, Lisa, that _is_ an interesting story. I see no mention of armed anti-poaching patrols and that concerns me. Does this have anything to do with the land that Claudine was looking at in an earlier post? Will Lola’s bonobos be released there? s.

Welcome to Eleke, hopefully, like precious Lomela and Kata, he will find the spirit to live at Lola…Thank you Claudine and everyone at your Sanctuary…this story, like so many others just breaks my heart…could the woman not see what physical and emotional pain this poor baby was in…sores, no teeth…truly repulsive how “humans” can behave, toward anilamls and one another.

Another horrifying display of the total disregard so many people have for these beautiful animals. Can you tell us if there is an international investigation to track down the hateful smugglers who were involved in this particular case? Please give him lots of love and thank everyone at Yola involved in his care and anyone who helped to talk that women into handing him over. He is too beautiful for words.

Oops. Typo. Too upset. Meant to say Lola, not Yola.

I have been reading about the thousands of forest set aside for them and the US and Congo initiative -I am wondering if this is the forest Claudine scouted out also? Whatever the case I am thrilled and I think this website of Lola and the San Diego Zoo have awoken the people on bonobos thank God!!

Sorry to say we lost SearchKindly this month. I have contacted Syed and asked that we be allowed to run again–I have a feeling that the search engine is becoming more popular. I’ll let you know what the time frame is.
Sheryl, Washington, DC on December 3rd, 2007 at 8:53 am
Cathy, if at all possible, I think we’ll have better luck AFTER the holidays. People are distracted and out of town for much of December and we want to win this time! s.
cathy-california on December 3rd, 2007 at 11:36 am
Sheryl, I agree. I don’t expect that we will be back in the running until after January. December has already been spoken for and I’m not sure that it will even be before Feb. I get the sense that the word is out and more people know about this opportunity for fundraising. The charity we lost to had their act together. When we were ahead by 3% yesterday, they had people voting all day until the poll closed. However they did it, it was impressive.
Sheryl, Washington, DC on December 4th, 2007 at 9:10 am
I think that’s for the best, that we wait a couple more months. Hopefully by then, Vanessa will be back from vacation and posting regularly again to draw attention to the blog. I feel bad that we couldn’t pull off the win, so I started a campaign page (see the link on the Manioc blog) for Lola. s.
Cathy-California on December 5th, 2007 at 1:42 am
Sheryl, I must be in a fog but I just don’t see the link on the Manioc blog.
Christine C. on December 13th, 2007 at 11:24 am
Please, please please…updates on Kata and Lomela, and Eleke…post them in French, I am sure someone can translate for the rest of us!!!
cathy-california on December 14th, 2007 at 12:54 am
