I don’t see why you couldn’t have a Bonobo as a pet. They are smaller and nicer than a Chimp. As long as you have a big house and a Vet that can treat it.
Ummm…. a bonobo could still break both your arms and bite off every one of your fingers. At Lola, when one of the males became agressive, five females ganged up on him, almost tore off his foot and testicals and he nearly died. Bonobos are less violent and smaller than chimps but that doesn’t mean they are dogs.
Also, bonobos are an ENDANGERED SPECIES!!!! For every ‘pet’ that makes it out of the country dozens more were killed. Even if you breed bonobos in country, we live in a global community. How can we, as conservationists, tell the government of Congo or the Congolese people that it is wrong to kill bonobos for bushmeat and keep them as pets, when they can point to our country and say, ‘well Americans keep bonobos as pets, why can’t we?’
Also, if you think bonobos can live in a house, try keeping a tiger in a backyard.

Humans are not very smart apes, IMO. Did you see the news story about the Kardashians (who are famous, apparently, for being famous)? They’ve adopted a chimpanzee. I’m just waiting for PETA to launch a campaign to save that baby and send her to a sanctuary. In the meantime, everyone should blog about it and write to their newspapers and leave comments wherever the story appears. It’s just WRONG to own wildlife. Hell, I have Mina, my doggie, living with me and even though the law says I own her, I know that’s not true.

Actually, Sheryl, I’m embarrassed to know this much about a Kardashian, but that story, though just released on her blog, was actually written awhile ago and then released to coincide w/some new show or something. Apparantly, the chimp was rented (UGH!!!!) and is already out of the picture and back w/its original jailer. So, yes, people — Please blast the Kardashians for this stupid act and announcement, but at least the chimp is no longer with them. (Though there is no telling if the people renting out the chimp are any better. I doubt it, though, because if they were good people they wouldn’t be renting chimps!)

Rented? That’s like renting a human. Positively disgusting. This could start some jet-set fad of renting non-human primates for parties, etc., and the Kardashians are responsible.
