I have some sad news. Kindu was found dead in the forest. This flu epidemic is absolutely horrible. Claudine thinks it was the terrible virus that ran through Kinshasa. There is no fever. Antiobiotics don’t do anything. The bonobos have severe respiratory infections and then they can’t breath for 3 days then they die. It’s 6 bonobos in a month now, including Mimi and her baby.
I know we’re doing a release drive but at the moment we desperately need funds for Lola. Because of the financial crisis, we have a shortfall this year for the sanctuary. Anything you can spare would help so much.
The flu virus has hit group 2 and there are 10 bonobos sick. I can’t take anyone else dying!!! I miss mimi so much. Then mixa, Mimi’s baby, Kisantu’s baby, Lodja. I haven’t had time to process any of it. Claudine told me this morning about the shortfall in the budget and i couldn’t believe it. Please send anything you can.
I just hope it doesn’t spread to the nursery or group 3. If Lomela or Kata or Lukuru or any one of the babies gets sick i think i’ll go crazy!
xxV.

Dear Claudine and everyone at Lola,
We are very sorry for what is happening and very well understand the pain as we have gone through a similar episode sometime back. We hope Krispin is receiving all the support to contain the epidemic. Dr. Rosa is here and will be more than happy to discuss matters with Krispin if he needs to.
Stay strong, our prayers are with you.
My heart goes out to all of you who have cared for and loved these bonobos. I pray things will get better soon for Lola.
Oh Vanessa, my heart is breaking for all of you…and you and all the bonobos are in my thoughts constantly…
I’ve been a hidden reader for months now, following the trials and tribulations of these young bonobos. I’m so sorry to hear about the difficulties you are going through at the moment. I hope that my small contribution will help you a little. Thank you for all you are doing for our closest living relatives. It is people and organizations like yours that restores my faith in humanity.
We are so sorry for this terrible situation. We have gone through a similar tragedy in the past and that sinking feeling!
Claudine and her team need all the help NOW than ever before. I’m sure PASA vets are in contact and trying to assist Crispin. Dr.Rosa is still here and please stay in touch if you need to discuss anything.
Stay strong Claudine……
We’ve sent a donation through Paypal and asked for help on your behalf at Facebook and Twitter. We’re thinking of you.
Hi Vanessa and Claudine, I sent out an appeal through various networks yesterday. I hope you see results. Sadly organizations are stretched but Born Free have responded and are sending you $500. I am in USA and have contacted WCS who have asked if you need veterinary assistance. Can you email me asap as I’m with John Robinson right now? Stay strong, we’re thinking about you. Let me know if there’s anything else we can do.
Dear Vanessa and Claudine,
very sad news infact. I send an appeal to ICCN and to international organizations and programmes
dealing with conservation. I also insert the news in my personal blog in Spanish: patarosusana.wordpress.com
You have all my support! Courage!!
