bonobo release - kubulu
Category: Uncategorized | Date: Jun 15 2009 | By: lolayabonobo
kubulu is the one of mudbath fame a few days ago. Well now he can go into the forest and take as many mudbaths as he likes. my first memory of kubulu is that every morning without fail he would run away from the nursery, run to our table as we were eating breakfast, plunge his hand into the sugar jar and step on all the plates then run off.
it was cute the first time, but when he did it EVERY morning for 6 weeks, it was like, ’seriously? kubulu, you did this yesterday. and the day before that. aren’t you like, sugar rushed out?’ but no. and he kept doign it until he was in grou p3.
he was very close to claudine. apart from the mamas, she was the only one who never got her hair pulled. i got my hair pulled lots. plus kicked in the head. in a friendly kungfu way…

Didn’t you tell us once that a full third of the released bonobos are expected to die during this project? I still don’t know enough about this release project to have any faith in it’s possibility for success. It’s all very shadowy and mysterious.

hey sheryl, i know i’ve been sketchy on the details - that’s my fault. this release has been in the making for 3 years. i have to fly to australia tommorrow but when i get there i will start posting about the seriousness of the release as a scientific project. the 30% mortality rate is a stat for chimps. no one knowsa bout bonobos - and that’s the point:) we have to figure out a method now, no matter how much we love little lomela….

OMG, Vanessa, are you saying that Lomela is part of the release group? How on earth can that be? And I don’t mean that from a biased point of view, but rather from all the humaninteraction she has been exposed to?

hi christine,
yes, lomela is part of the release. all the bonobos at the sanctuary are exposed to human interaction - they need to be to get them through their first few months. but as lomela has gotten bigger and stronger she has actually become more shy of human interaction. in contrast, she is SO amazing with the other bonobos, she is a real glue, she will be such an asset to the release group.
don’t worry, they aren’t just dumping them in the forest. harvard, and duke are running post monitoring release , where peopel will follow them all the time, and then there will be vets and a field manager and a keeper that the bonobos trust on hand at all times.

I am very, very distressed to hear this…we were told months ago that the only bonobos being released were completely set apart from the rest of the bonobos at Lola, with little to no human interaction — we were told this when we asked if there was any chance of Lola bonobos taking the flu strain into the wild. This is most disconcerting and I feel like I have no real idea at all what is happening with this release, or which animals are actually slated to go. I am sorry, but I am very worried indeed. Not to mention, when we adopted Lomela in December, we were not told she was part of the release project in June.
